Technology for polyamide materials

In a recent development, Tolsa has applied its unique ADINS flame retardant technology to polyamide (PA) materials for the electrical/electronic (E&E), automotive, textile and transportation markets. The company is developing new products for these material combinations.

Over the past two years, Tolsa has completed extensive testing on amide (PA) substrates using a range of ADINS products. The company has successfully reduced total heat release levels by more than 20% compared to competitor additive solutions.

ADINS flame retardant technology provides polymers with a range of versatile additives that act as flame retardant synergists for halogen and halogen-free flame retardant materials. They are an alternative to antimony trioxide (ATO), one of the most widely used flame retardants but whose safety is under regulatory scrutiny due to toxicity and carcinogenicity concerns. also,
Changes in ATO prices and supply issues have created additional concerns among end users. In some applications, such as the electrical and electronic industry, its use is unavoidable, although the increased load creates processability and performance issues. Therefore, safer flame retardant synergists like ADINS are needed to reduce the amount of ATO without compromising performance and processability.

ADINS helps reduce ATO content in formulations (such as in PVC or PP matrices) by up to 50%, or completely eliminate ATO when combined with flame retardant materials such as ATH or MDH. ADINS flame retardant synergists also significantly reduce dripping, allowing different material combinations such as polyamides and polyesters to achieve V-0 ratings.

Increasing demand in the wire and cable segment

At K in Düsseldorf, Germany, Tolsa will also highlight the wire and cable market, where ADINS flame retardant products are meeting the growing demand for flame retardant synergists in an environment of increasingly stringent regulations.

ADINS technology allows the development of custom grades, guaranteed to meet customer and industry specific requirements. ADINS greatly improves the performance of plastic components in fire conditions, making them compliant with the strictest international health and safety regulations, such as the European Construction Products Regulation (CPR) or Railway EN
45545 Regulations.

ADINS flame retardant synergists promote char formation and create a physical barrier that protects materials and reduces heat and smoke emissions and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The dosage required for ADINS is very low, ranging from 1% to 5% for commonly used formulations; however, the effect on performance is significant and even allows for a reduction in the dosage of flame retardants.

Fungicide series approved as polymer additives

Tolsa said it will also showcase its line of ADINS Protection fungicides, which have been approved for use as polymer additives.

The company offers three different grades of ADINS biocide products for thermoplastic applications — two silver-based and one zinc-based. ADINS technology allows the addition of different active substances on the surface of the clay to obtain a homogeneous distribution. In addition, the product allows optimal dispersion in the matrix, which means high antimicrobial activity at lower doses.

Due to its stability, ADINS
Protection can reduce the amount of actives to achieve the same antimicrobial activity, thereby increasing its durability, reducing formulation costs and minimizing its environmental impact. Target applications include outdoor furniture, architectural and hospital products, as well as plastic and rubber applications such as toys.

Research has confirmed that PVC containing ADINS protective additive is biocidal against two of the most common bacteria found in swimming pools (Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus).
