Nitrous oxide alias nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula N₂O and CAS number 10028-97-2, which has a mild narcotic effect and can make people laugh. Nitrous oxide can be classified into four main categories, namely, electronic grade, industrial grade, food grade and medical grade nitrous oxide, depending on the application area. Among them, electronic grade nitrous oxide is the highest purity level, which is usually used in the electronics industry such as display panels, photovoltaic modules, semiconductor manufacturing and integrated circuit manufacturing. It requires a very low level of impurities to ensure that it does not contaminate or damage microelectronic devices. Industrial grade Nitrous Oxide has relatively low purity requirements, but still needs to meet certain quality standards to ensure its effectiveness and safety during use. It is widely used in various industrial fields, such as oxidising agent and refrigerant in metal processing, welding and cutting processes. Food grade nitrous oxide is mainly used in the food industry for making cream, milk foam and so on. It also has relatively high purity requirements to ensure that it does not contaminate food or harm consumer health. The purity requirement of food grade nitrous oxide usually complies with relevant food safety standards or regulations, such as FDA, EU and other standards. Medical grade nitrous oxide is mainly used in the medical field, especially as inhalation anaesthetics for surgery, pain treatment and other fields with rapid anaesthesia and awakening. It requires a high degree of purity and safety to ensure the health and safety of patients. However, medical grade nitrous oxide is classified as a vulnerable poison, which is controlled by the state and requires qualification before it can be produced, sold and used. In addition, nitrous oxide can also be classified according to the purity of the product, which can be roughly divided into several categories, such as 99.9% (3N), 99.999% (5N), 99.9995% (5N5), and 99.9999% (6N), etc. The electronic-grade nitrous oxide has a higher requirement for nitrous oxide content, and its purity is usually above 5N.
At present, the production capacity of nitrous oxide is mainly concentrated in France, Germany and China, among which multinational enterprises such as France Air Liquide Group (Air Liquide) and Germany Messer Group (Messer) have a greater influence in the global nitrous oxide market by virtue of their strong technical strength, perfect market channels, good product quality and brand image. Meanwhile, the competitiveness of China’s nitrous oxide industry has been increasing, such as Jinhong Gas Company Limited, Chongqing Tonghui Kefa Gas Company Limited, Dalian Keliand Semiconductor Materials Company Limited, Beijing Luling Gas Technology Company Limited, etc. Nitrous oxide has been exported widely to many foreign markets. According to the “2024-2028 Global Nitrous Oxide Industry Deep Market Research and Key Regions Research Report” released by Xinsiye Industry Research Centre, China’s nitrous oxide production capacity in 2023 was 105,000 tonnes.
