Latest: SABIC, a global leader in the chemical industry, has released BlueHero, an expanding ecosystem of materials, solutions, expertise and programs designed to help accelerate the transition from energy to electricity.
The company launched BlueHero as a starting point to support the automotive industry’s mission to create better, safer and more efficient electric vehicles (EVs), with a focus on improving battery structural components with expertise in unique flame retardant materials and solution development.
The automotive industry is leading the way towards new, more sustainable mobility solutions. This includes a major shift to battery-powered electric vehicles, which can convert more than 77 percent of electricity into power, compared with 12 to 30 percent for vehicles using internal combustion engines.
In addition to this high performance, electric vehicles do not emit exhaust pollutants, and generally reduce greenhouse gas emissions significantly during operation – thus making an important contribution to the achievement of global climate change goals.
Abdulrahman, Executive Vice President, Petrochemicals, SABIC
“Through our BlueHero strategic plan, we are actively committed to investing in, developing and delivering material solutions to support the transition to electricity, reduce emissions and help address climate change,” said Al-Fageeh.
“Our decision to initially focus on the automotive sector reflects the urgency of making progress in this area, and the strengths we already have in the established materials and capabilities that can allow us to support the transition to electric vehicles and provide a solid foundation for low-carbon Contribute to the future. Through BlueHero, consistent with our purpose of delivering ‘vital chemistry’ and shaping a more sustainable future, we are strengthening our position to develop and deliver the impactful solutions the industry needs, Together and heroically bring us one step closer to a clean air economy.”
SABIC offers cost-effective and technologically advanced thermoplastics – which can offer significant advantages over traditional materials (metals) – to help the automotive industry further enhance the performance of electric vehicles. For example, the use of plastics in electric vehicle batteries, electrical and charging components can provide multiple benefits: reduced weight and system complexity, increased driving range, expanded design freedom, simplified manufacturability, recyclability, and enhanced thermal Management and occupant safety.
The company’s new BlueHero electrification program also leverages specific knowledge and expertise around large part molding, compression molding, advanced injection molding and polymer flame interaction to help support customers with solutions that meet critical requirements and enable efficient production.
The company expects to strengthen and expand its thermoplastic offerings to help with electrification, as well as strengthen its focus and new investments in BlueHero.
“Transitioning from combustion engine-based vehicles to electric propulsion is not a simple linear process.” Abdullah S., General Manager, SABICETP and Market Solutions Division
Al-Otaibi said, “Indeed, a successful transition will require producers to abandon many traditional materials and entrenched approaches to design, engineering and manufacturing. Through the BlueHero program, our team follows a holistic systems engineering approach in working with industry – – Enables customers to more efficiently optimize electric vehicle battery systems using thermoplastics.”
An integral part of SABIC’s BlueHero ecosystem is its global team of engineers, researchers and scientists. The team is leveraging its established and growing expertise in the design, testing and data generation of electric vehicle batteries and related applications to solve problems and overcome current limitations. As part of its work, the team works with customers, development partners and others across the value chain, from OEMs and tiers to tool suppliers and test houses.
With so many opportunities for adoption of electric technology in the world, SABIC expects to expand the focus and scope of its BlueHero program to help support work in other sectors. These are likely to include energy storage, charging infrastructure, other modes of transportation, and industrial and consumer equipment.
