● These award-winning paint products sustainably kill a variety of bacteria and viruses, including COVID-19
PPG recently announced that two of its industry-leading antibacterial and antiviral products have won the 2022 Global Top 100 Technology R&D Awards (R&D®
100), the two products are: PPG’s COPPER ARMORTM antimicrobial coating developed with Corning’s Guardiant® technology, and COMEX® VINIMEX®
TOTAL antiviral and antibacterial coatings.
“The PPG team continues to innovate to help customers address the major challenges they face.” David CTO and Vice President of Technology at PPG
Bem said: “At PPG, our team has been investing in product development and innovative solutions to solve the problems and challenges faced by customers. In some specific cases, not only the ability of in-house R&D innovation is required, but also the use of other well-known institutions ( Such as Corning) to build strong partnerships. We are honored to be recognized for our products to help provide additional protection during the ongoing pandemic.”
Copper
Armor coatings are suitable for high-traffic areas, including medical, hospitality, office and educational environments, and residential applications. It features Corning’s Guardiant technology, which contains natural copper with antibacterial properties. The coating can continuously kill all kinds of bacteria and viruses in contact with the coated surface within two hours[i], including SARS-CoV-2, for up to five years[ii] and harmful microorganisms on doors and windows. In addition, Copper
Armor coatings also form a strong mildew-resistant coating on dry paint films.
“We started working on Corning’s Guardiant technology a few years ago because we believed that copper’s intrinsic properties could provide a truly effective antimicrobial coating solution.” Joydeep, vice president and program director of Corning’s Specialty Surfaces business unit
Lahiri said, “Corning invented glass technology that can take advantage of copper’s antibacterial properties in coatings, while maintaining the look and feel of the coating surface. We are very pleased to partner with PPG on their Copper
Armor coatings make antimicrobial surface technology more accessible to the masses. ”
Practice has proved that Comex VINIMEX
TOTAL antibacterial and antiviral coatings can kill 99.9%[iii] of bacteria and viruses, including influenza and SARS-CoV-2, on dry paint surfaces within two hours. The coatings were developed in response to growing health trends and consumer awareness that coatings can be used to create a safe and healthy environment. It is ideal for high-traffic locations such as hospitals, schools, and nursing homes. In addition to awards in the mechanical/materials category, Comex
VINIMEX TOTAL antibacterial and antiviral coatings also won the R&D 100 Bronze Special Award for the fight against the new crown pneumonia epidemic.
In addition, PPG
The SPRAYMASTER™ portable painting system was also a finalist for the 2022 Global Top 100 Technology R&D Awards. Specifically designed for wood trim surfaces, the system can be applied 50% faster than traditional application applications, and can be applied in one coat for perfect coverage and fast drying.
R&D 100 Selection Committee and R&D World Magazine through R&D
The 100 Awards recognize the 100 most innovative technologies and services that have emerged over the past year. Over the years, PPG has won a total of 34 R&D 100 awards.
About the Top 100 Global Technology R&D Awards
Since 1963, the Global Top 100 Technology R&D Awards have been dedicated to recognizing the revolutionary innovations and the best technology products that were newly launched that year. Past award-winning products include advanced testing equipment, innovative materials, and advanced technologies in the fields of chemistry, biomedicine, consumer products, and high-energy physics, spanning corporate, academia, and government-funded research.

Kills 99.9% of bacteria, such as Staph, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterococcus faecium, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii, and Enterobacter aerogenes within two hours of contact with the coated surface , methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE), Escherichia coli (E.
Coli) and Salmonella, as well as feline calicivirus and SARS-CoV-2 virus.
[ii] According to the “Protocol for the Evaluation of Bactericidal Activity of Antimicrobial Coating Surfaces” (MRID 51062601)
The test method has an antimicrobial validity of up to five years as long as the integrity of the surface is maintained and as part of a comprehensive infection control and sanitation program. Cleaning agents commonly used to maintain coated surfaces are permitted, including multipurpose, bleach, and hydrogen peroxide cleaners, but quaternary ammonium-based disinfectants should be avoided.
[iii] 4 common pathogens (Escherichia coli ATCC 8739, Salmonella typhimurium ATCC 14028, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC) after 2 hours exposure to the coated surface
9027, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC6538P) and viruses (coronavirus SARS-CoV-2-MX-BC2-2020p1VE6 and H1N1)
It can be reduced by 99.9%. The effectiveness of this coating is supported by studies conducted according to JISZ2801:2010 and ISO 21702 methods.
